In this lineup topic episode, Brandon Styll shares two reflections aimed at Nashville's restaurant community. After attending a Bill Burr comedy show where audience phones were locked in Yondr pouches, he found himself struck by how freeing and human the phone-free experience felt, and he wonders aloud what restaurants would be like if guests stowed their phones at the table. He pitches the idea of phone lockers or table baskets paired with a free appetizer or amuse-bouche as an incentive, suggesting the next big hospitality technology might actually be the absence of technology.
The second half pivots to mental health and leadership in a post-2020 industry. Drawing on a Brene Brown and Scott Sonenshein episode, Brandon urges managers and owners to recognize that guests and staff are not the same people they were in 2019. He introduces his own practice of a five-minute check-in with every employee, not as a performance review but as a genuine, how are you doing conversation. He closes with a personal note on two and a half years of sobriety and learning to embrace his feelings.

"If you're leading your team, if you're treating your co-workers the same way you did in 2019, stop."

"Two and a half years tomorrow for me of not drinking and really focusing on my feelings, and it's fucking awesome. I like having feelings. I like not being okay because I was never allowed to."

00:00Hey Music City this is Brandon Styll and I am back with another episode of lineup topics. Today's episode is brought to you by the compost company. We just heard an episode with Clay and Jeffrey Ezell who are the owners of the compost company. What they do is they literally take your food waste, your organic food waste in your compostable containers, compostable silverware and they come pick it up from you weekly, sometimes more than once a week. They give you a trash can that's got a biodegradable liner. You put it in this special trash can that goes next to your dumpster. They come pick it up, they compost it, turn it into organic soil which then gets turned around and sold to farmers. So literally you can complete the full circle of your food. They're amazing guys. Go back and listen to their episode if you'd like to learn in detail. But if you just want to learn more give Jeffrey Ezell a call. His number is 615-866-8152 or email Jeffrey at compostcompany.com or follow him on all the socials. They're posting all kinds of cool stuff. They've already had a couple of people call and sign up so I'm super excited that they are, that you guys are out there and you care and you want to reduce methane production in the greenhouse gases that happen when food waste goes in the landfill. So you guys are amazing. Thank you for doing that.
01:19Line up topics today is in two different things. I have two different thoughts. One thought I want to run by you is I went and saw Bill Burrow the other day and we had to put our phones in these little yonder pouches in my watch too and I'm waiting for the show to start. I have no idea what time it is because I can't, there's no clocks. I feel like I was in a casino sitting in the Bridgestone Arena but it was really loud. It was really loud in the arena and I was like damn I guess when nobody's looking at their phone they have to talk to each other. That's kind of cool and I found myself feeling mildly free because normally I would be sitting there looking at my phone but I couldn't. My cousin was there with me. He went to go get a beer and I just sat there and I just waited and I watched people. It was really nice because I am so addicted to my phone. I started thinking back in 2018 I went to the Food Service Technology Convention in Orlando, Florida and then these really cool lockers. They were like lockers. I'm gonna post a picture on my Instagram stories tomorrow morning so go to Nashville Restaurant Radio on Instagram. Look at the stories. You'll see a picture of this locker and I'll post a link to them and what people do is they come in the restaurant and then they can put their phones in a locker just like a safe in a hotel. They type in a code and there's charging ports inside of the locker so you can put like four phones in there and charge them while you're eating and I thought wow what an interesting concept because everybody's talking about the next technology is gonna be but what if the next technology is going without technology? What if instead of people sitting down at your table looking at their phone when the server comes back to say are you guys ready to order they go you know what we haven't looked at the menu if you could come back in a couple minutes or instead of looking at their phone instead of eating their meal or taking pictures they might actually connect with one another and I just thought it was an interesting thought process that you could put a basket on the edge of the table and say hey if you guys put your phones in the basket we'll offer you a free appetizer or maybe you do some kind
03:21like you have a free treat chef's got some sample amuse-bouche that you can have if you put your phones in there and give them some sort of incentive to actually connect and maybe that's the memorable thing they eat at your restaurant and they actually get to have an experience instead of constantly being distracted by notifications and phone calls so I don't know it was just an interesting thought because I knew that these lockers exist and I thought hey what if people walked in and that was a thing what if you saved seven minutes per table turn people not looking at their phones what if people left and had the best conversation of their life or had the best date of their life because they weren't constantly looking at their phone it was an interesting concept and curious to know what you think about it and I wanted to bring it up here because the topic I want to talk about today if you're a lineup topic and this is really for for anybody out there if you're a server if you're bartender if you're a busboy if you're a host but especially if you are a manager if you're a manager and owner anybody who's in a leadership position we're back from 2019 2019 was the last time we had any real normalcy in our lives and I'm constantly searching for new podcast different things different perspectives as I go for hikes and whatever I do but I came across this episode on dare to lead dare to lead is Brene Brown's podcast is one of my favorite she's one of my favorite people because I've mentioned before I don't not real good at using my emotions and well the emotions that are deeper than happiness sadness anger you know learning the difference between shame and guilt you know those type things Brene is great at that but she has it she has a podcast called dare to lead I highly recommend it to you and she had an episode with Scott Sun and shine and the episode is titled why will never be the same again and why we shouldn't be the same again it's a real thing because
05:23March 12th 2019 a lot of people March 2nd 2019 or 2020 our worlds changed our worlds changed forever and people we lost a lot of people and if you didn't lose you know your yourself if you didn't die you knew somebody who was sick or almost died or did die or multiple people who died and there's people who are afraid out there and the one thing I think coming back into restaurants is we've been doing this for a while so there's not as much of that there but we have to recognize that our guests are scared people in general aren't a hundred percent back a lot of people are but a lot of people aren't and one thing that I'm doing right now is I'm intentionally sitting down with every single employee for five minutes I'm intentionally sitting down with every single employee because I care and I want to make sure that everybody's okay I'm calling it my five-minute check-in and I'm I'm encouraging you to do this if it's with another co-worker or if it's with you know anybody it's a five-minute check-in the first I don't know six months after we started the podcast my first question to every guest was how are you doing and I don't mean that as a greeting I seriously mean that like how are you doing are you okay because so many people's lives change and they've changed forever and there still is a lot of people that aren't okay I'm about to put out an episode next week with the guy named Zach Oates in this episode is an epic episode you don't know who he is he's the CEO and founder of a company called ovation and he is amazing this guy threw out so much amazing knowledge and one of the things he said was social media we look at social media and everybody's front yard is beautiful you're always posting all the really good stuff occasionally you'll see somebody that's struggling but everybody's backyard is on fire everybody out there has something going on in their life that probably you don't know about and it's a tough thing to get that out of somebody but if you genuinely
07:28care about people I think that's the thing that we need to be focusing on right now you know we're focusing so much on this labor shortage and the supply chain well you know what if we checked in on every single person if we genuinely cared about every single person that worked with us we took five minutes to have a conversation to say hey this isn't a performance review this isn't I don't want to talk about you know full hands in full hands out or whatever it is you talked about in your restaurant this is a how you doing how's your wife how's your kids how's your husband how's everything going is your backyard on fire and if it is it's okay and yet it's an opportunity to become vulnerable yourself to sit down with somebody and say you know what I'm not I'm not doing great or I am doing great but I'm I'm here for you and I don't think any of us know truly where everybody's at and I think the point of this podcast was every single person out there has changed and if you're leading your team if you're treating your co-workers the same way you did in 2019 stop because the one thing that is is a common uniter amongst everybody is that we're all people and nobody's perfect and everybody has their issues and the thing that we need to do most right now is put our arms around people versus building walls and so that's that's our lineup topic today I don't know how you're doing out there but I care I care that you're doing okay and I'm you know this isn't some crazy motivational speech but it's okay to not be okay guys like don't you don't have to put on this brave face I mean that's if you listen to my episode on January the second where it's you know me telling my story my whole life was I was taught that you have to stand up there and you have to have a brave face and you're a man be a man don't talk about your feelings and two and a half years tomorrow's two and a half years for me of not drinking and really focusing on my feelings and it's fucking awesome I like having feelings I
09:31like not being okay because I was never allowed to I like connecting with people it's really really special which is why Jen always jokes and she says you fall in love with everybody that comes in here and no matter who it is when I have an hour-long conversation with somebody where you're just deep and you get into it you can't help but fall in love with people people are amazing people everybody so that's my that's my topic to you guys if that's something that you care about if it's nothing you care about but go check out the Brene Brown episode with Scott Sun and Shine it's a really really good episode she has a ton of amazing episodes and I just saw that she has a Netflix special of Atlas of the Heart I'm gonna go watch that tonight because I'm still not over this sickness God bless it's driving me nuts so one thing at the end of every show I tell you I hope that you guys are being safe out there which means responsible safe when it was wearing a mask or if it wasn't you know hand sanitizer washing your hands doing those things I mean it I hope that you guys are being safe and when I say I love you guys bye I mean that you guys are my people this the city this industry everybody out there you guys are amazing and I do hope that you're being safe and I do love you guys bye
